SPC Composition

Solid Phenolic Compact (SPC) by Durcon is produced by saturating multiple layers of kraft paper with phenolic resin. SPC is a balanced construction on both top and bottom for increased product stability. A layer of printed décor paper is placed over the built-up kraft paper and is pressed. A sheet of melamine is placed on top of the decorative sheet for scratch and wear resistance. For increased chemical resistance, a polyester sheet is placed over the melamine sheet and the polyester is transferred to the melamine via heat and pressure. The resulting sandwich is fused together under heat and pressure (more than 1,000 psi).
Phenolic and melamine are thermoset plastics, therefore the curing process transforms the resin into plastic by a cross-linking process that converts the paper sheets into a solid structure. Thermosetting creates strong, irreversible bonds that contribute to SPC's durability.
